Are you interested in ‘hands-on’ archaeology … or do you think you may have a site of archaeological interest?

… If so, perhaps we can help!

The Suffolk Archaeological Field Group is an amateur group which has investigated a range of sites across the county through documentary research, fieldwalking, metal detecting, geophysical surveys and small excavations.  Part of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology & History, which is affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology, the group exists to help people with an active interest in archaeology to take part in field projects.

The interests and activities of the members of the group are varied, and they have a wide range of archaeological experience and training, which they are willing to share on a variety of projects across the county. The Field Group also receives training and advice from Suffolk County Council’s Archaeological Service. In return, it furnishes the County’s Historic Environment Record with information on new sites and survey results.

The Field Group is also very happy to hear from landowners who believe they have features of archaeological or historical interest on their land, and are interested in finding out more. The Field Group can provide a range of non-intrusive surveys, including structured fieldwalking, earthwork, and geophysical surveying, together with limited-scale excavations. The Field Group is insured, and will only carry out work as agreed with the landowner, who will remain in control of access and the extent of work at all times.

excavationThe Field Group can advise on how to contact the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service for further support, if required. The Field Group does not, however, carry out work to satisfy local authority planning and development requirements.
