Dr Stanley West, FSA, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Gloucestershire on the 7th March, aged 93. He was County Archaeologist for Suffolk from 1970 to 1991, and founder of the Suffolk Archaeological Unit (now the Archaeological Service of Suffolk County Council) in 1974. He was elected a Vice-President of the SIAH in 2000. He is probably best known for his contribution to Anglo-Saxon archaeology, particularly through his excavations at West Stow and the subsequent recreation of the site as the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village.
