A day’s conference which will consider the impact of the coast on Suffolk’s heritage from prehistory to medieval times

SIAH gratefully acknowledges the assistance of its member Chris Cardwell with preparations for our Conference, and would like to thank our sponsors Adnams, Southwold Museum and Historical Society(SM&HS) and Southwold Town Council for their contributions.

Tickets available to SIAH members at £15 pp, SM&HS members at £15 pp, & non-members £20, includes tea & coffee, but make own arrangements for lunch, many options a short walk away on the High Street.

Travelling to Southwold you can avoid parking problems and charges by going by SIAH private-hire Galloways coach to the Arts Centre venue for £7.50 pp

7.30 am                   Ram Meadow car-park Bury St Edmunds

circa 8.30 am                 Ipswich, London Rd, Park & Ride

9.50 am                   arrive Southwold Arts Centre

Return:                    depart at 5pm

NB £7.50 applies whether boarding at Bury or Ipswich. Provision of coach dependent on there being sufficient passengers. If not, payment for coach will be refunded


Some parking available in Southwold Primary School playground adjacent to venue, for Blue Badge holders & those with walking difficulties, from 9.15 a.m but please reserve a space for this, see below. Southwold parking information can be provided with ticket for others coming by car.

Our Speakers:

Brian Ayers retired County Archaeologist for Norfolk; Honorary Senior Lecturer (UEA) since 2011; author of The German Ocean: Medieval Europe around the North Sea (2016).

Paul Constantine, Researcher, Sutton Hoo: the Anglo-Saxon Ship

Prof Vince Gaffney , Chair Landscape Archaeology, University of Bradford, with research interests including DNA profiling of lost landscapes of Mesolithic Europe His award-winning book Europe’s Lost World pub.2010.

Prof David Sear , Professor in Physical Geography, University of Southampton, interests include: geophysics and acoustic imaging survey of the submerged medieval town of Dunwich, see
