AUTUMN HISTORY WORKSHOP
St Mary’s Church, Redgrave
Saturday 29th September 2018
10.30am – 4.00pm
“THE PASTONS AND THEIR ENGLAND”
Tutor: Dr Rosemary Horrox
This study day is a ‘must’ for anyone interested in the late medieval period in England, as it looks at the Pastons, the East Anglian family whose private letters have become well-known. The Paston family established themselves among the East Anglian gentry in the middle of the 15th century, reputedly making the social “jump” from husbandman to royal justice and landowner in only one generation. They are thus a classic example of upward social mobility in the late middle ages. But their
fame today rests primarily on the survival of a major collection of their private letters, allowing us a uniquely intimate insight into the life of this family.
This course will look first at the rise – and rise – of the family itself, and what this tells us about the workings of social mobility. The letters will then be used to explore three further aspects of medieval life, drawing also on other contemporary sources: husbands and wives, parents and children, lords and men.
*Who were the Pastons?
*What is the value of the Paston letters?
*What does this collection of letters tell us about the society of their time?
Come along to this fascinating study day find the answers.
(Tutor’s Note: There are various editions and selections of the Paston letters available, as well as studies of the family, including one by Helen Castor.)
